How we select our seeds
Florette chooses its salads very carefully, to ensure that consumers are totally satisfied and nature is protected.
Between them, Florette's farmers and experts choose suitable salad varieties by looking at how the salad behaves in the field (growing time, resistance to disease and pests and amount of water required). So we choose our varieties not just because they are delicious and crunchy, but also because they are naturally strong.
Florette's agronomists, present wherever Florette salads grow, check cultivation sites to ensure that the selected varieties are being grown in compliance with guidelines.

Fields selection
At Florette, we choose our fields with great care, so that our delicious, fresh lettuces can enjoy the very best growing conditions.
Florette lettuces are grown in coastal areas, where the ocean's cool, temperate climate makes growing conditions ideal.
Florette's farmers are conscious of the fact that their land is borrowed from future generations, so they protect their fields from pollution and look after natural resources.
When choosing plots of land, Florette staff start by delving into the past. They study the history of each plot to make sure that the soil hasn't been polluted in any way, either naturally or due to human activity.
They also make sure that there is no agricultural or industrial source of pollution near the plot.
Finally, they analyse the richness and structure of the soil, to make sure that the land can support Florette lettuces naturally, with the minimum possible need for fertilizers.

Growing conditions
Farmers use a 25 point code of good practice developed by Florette when growing and harvesting lettuces.
The soil is prepared before sowing, allowing the plants to root well and therefore to grow better. The better the plant roots, the more the lettuce will be able to feed naturally as it grows, developing into a strong plant resistant to disease.
Throughout the cultivation process, Florette farmers manage the amount water needed by the ettucles strictly, to ensure that they grow well but that this precious resource is not wasted:
- After sowing, the ground is kept very wet to help the seeds germinate
- The plants are then watered less often, to allow them to take root.
- Drip systems are used to ensure that irrigation is localised, saving water. This keeps the leaves of the lettuce crunchy and full of flavour.
Florette experts analyse the soil during cultivation to determine the quantities of organic fertilizers required. Similarly, phytopharmaceutical products are only used if they are strictly justified.
A complete record is kept of the entire cultivation process (irrigation, organic fertilizers and any treatment given) to guarantee traceability for each and every lettuce.

Harvesting
All lettuces have an age when their quality is optimal. This is where the skill and experience of Florette's farmers really becomes essential. No scientific measuring process can determine whether a lettuce has reached maturity, the only thing that counts is having soaked up experience of the land and the product, which is what the people at Florette have been doing for over 20 years.
Florette makes the most of the cool of the early morning to carefully harvest lettuces just when they reach the perfect stage of maturity, never too early or too late.
Only the very best lettuces are harvested, and within three hours they are in a cold store, which keeps them fresh and full of flavour.
The lettuces are cut and washed within 48 hours
